The title of this piece comes from one of the many enduring legends of the American West - ghost riders, or phantom cowboys, whose apparitions ride through the night skies. According to the original story, as a Texas rancher in the late 1870's was driving his massive herd to the market, a local homesteader's cattle wandered into the larger herd. When the rancher made no attempt to separate the two groups of cattle, the angry homesteader confronted the rancher, demanding that his cattle be returned to him. Ignoring the irate homesteader, the rancher pulled his herd onto a mesa, which is an outcropping of land. The steep drop-off at the end of the mesa provided a natural barrier against predators. As the rancher and his hired hands slept, the homesteader slipped past the lone guard and startled the cattle by waving a blanket and firing his gun wildly into the night air. Terrified, thousands of cattle stampeded to their deaths, charging straight off the edge of the mesa. Two of the rancher's men were also killed as they tried in vain to bring the herd under control. Early the next morning, the rancher exacted a terrible vengeance. He captured the homesteader, tied him to his own horse, and drove him over the ledge at exactly the same spot where the herd had plunged the night before. Ever since that fateful night, local ranchers say that cattle always stampede at the same spot, even when there is no visible cause for panic. And, some say tha when it storms over the mesa, you can see the ghost of the murdered homesteader chasing his phantom herd across the night sky. Appropriate for middle school and smaller high school groups. Second clarinets usually stay below the break. Parts are written with more independence, and instrumentation increases slightly. There is still adequate doubling in the lower voices. Grades 2 - 2.5.
