The music was normally based on a short musical extract that was embellished and developed. Often the music formed variations on the hexachord. a series of six notes which ascend step by step. in a polyphonic manner with a free and improvisatory nature. Ensemble fantasias gradually diminished in popularity up to around 1700, but their keyboard counterparts retained their importance.
