James Hotchkiss Rogers was born in Fair Haven, Connecticut, on February 7th, 1857, the son of an Episcopal priest. When he was 13, the family moved to Chicago, where he studied piano at Lake Forest Academy. Upon graduating in 1874, he studied organ with Clarence Eddy, and then moved on to Berlin, where he spent two years studying with August Haupt, Eddy's former teacher. While there he also studied piano with Heinrich Ehrlich and Albert Loeschhorn. He spent the next three years in Paris studying orga with Alexandre Guilmant, piano with Henri Fissot, and composition with Charles-Marie Widor. Returning to America in 1880, Rogers spent a year as organist at First Congragational Church in Burlington, Iowa before moving to Cleveland, where he served as music director of Anshe Chesed Congragation. later known as Euclid Avenue Temple. and First Unitarian Church.
