The two caprices op. 144 paraphrase the popular Hebriden Ouverture by Mendelssohn, offering a glimpse of the high art of extemporization. Free improvisation on a given theme was a special gift of Heller's, and he was able to thrill audiences with this ability even as a child prodigy traveling all across Europe. This musical paraphrase, carefully put to paper by an experienced piano virtuoso who was building on his already extensive background as a composer, invites all performers at the piano to develop a feeling for how eminent the art of free improvisation was (once upon a time) even in the world of classical music.
